Ollie’s Story

Ollie’s story is a journey that encapsulates both struggle and triumph, and the transformative power of finding a supportive environment.

Before Ollie’s diagnosis of Multiple System Atrophy (MSA), life was marked by a passion for music and a deep friendship with Ash, a tenant at Liverty Housing. However, as Ollie’s health declined rapidly in 2021, the challenges of his living situation became apparent. His commission flat, inadequate for Ollie’s needs, was fraught with issues—frequent falls, cramped quarters unsuitable for a wheelchair, and a surrounding environment plagued by drug use and violence. Ollie’s deteriorating health demanded a change, a safer and more accommodating space.

The transition to Gadsden in late 2023 with partner, Jayne, was nothing short of a revelation for Ollie. The spaciousness of Gadsden, with wide doorways and thoughtful accessibility features, was a breath of fresh air.

The newfound freedom of movement within their apartment, coupled with the close proximately of nearby amenities, brought immense relief. No longer confined, Ollie could navigate their home with ease, finding solace in the welcoming atmosphere and supportive community.

What sets Gadsden apart is not just its physical space but the sense of safety and belonging it provides. The on-site support staff have been instrumental in Ollie’s journey, offering assistance with a genuine understanding of his needs. Neighbours, too, have extended kindness and respect, creating a nurturing environment where Ollie feels valued and accepted. The rooftop garden and spacious balcony have become havens, offering moments of tranquillity and joy, especially with the addition of their beloved cat Lily.

The central location of Gadsden was a strategic choice, facilitating easier access for friends to visit from across Melbourne. Proximity to public transportation, supermarkets, and local eateries has enhanced Ollie’s independence, enabling more social engagements and a resurgence of his musical pursuits. “Living in my new home has just enabled me to be more social,” Ollie shares, highlighting the positive impact on his well-being and quality of life.

For anyone considering a move to Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) like Gadsden, Ollie’s advice is invaluable. Seek advocacy and support from experienced professionals, and don’t hesitate to reach out to organisations like People With Disability Australia (PWDA). A knowledgeable Support Coordinator can make all the difference, guiding you through the process and ensuring you find the right fit for your needs.

In sharing Ollie’s journey, we celebrate not just the resilience of the human spirit but the transformative power of a supportive community at Gadsden. It’s a testament to the profound impact of accessible, inclusive housing on individual lives.
