Liverty Housing & TAC statement on NDIS changes
The NDIS is a complex space that can be daunting for many, and that’s especially true now, in the wake of recent budget announcements.
There’s an understandable level of concern in the disability community about changes to the NDIS. Some of this is due to the natural uncertainty that stems from change, but for this community, it’s also about the re-emergence of old wounds – facing another round of uncertainty in a life where uncertainty has been common and where planning, safety, security and reliability are all vital. The old concerns of the sense of ‘othering’, feeling unwanted or burdensome also come up for many of our community at times like these.
There’s a lot of opinion and perspectives flying around in our media. At this stage of the conversation, given the available information, much of this is premature and ultimately, unhelpful.
What we do know at this stage is that SDA housing itself is not at risk in the proposed changes. What we don’t yet know with enough clarity is the impact on all the wraparound elements that touch upon housing, such as referral pathways and ongoing support.
The voice of the disability community must be heard, and to contribute in a meaningful way that recognises the end to end, holistic impacts of the changes proposed, a fuller set of information is needed.
Liverty Housing and our Tenant Advisory Committee (TAC) will make comment when we have further clarity on the full scope of changes and how they will work in practice.
In the meantime, to the community that we work with, know that we will continue to support you through this time and we will work to ensure sector voices are heard when the right time comes.
