Mark’s Specialist Disability Accommodation Journey

From Struggle to Strength: A Journey Toward True Independence

In September 2022, Mark found himself at a breaking point. His apartment, which was meant to be a home, had become a daily battle. His wheelchair could only take him as far as the bathroom door. From there, he had no choice but to wall-walk, balancing on trembling legs. Every step was a gamble. Mark fell more times than he could remember, often ending up in the hospital after some of the worst tumbles. He lived with the constant fear that one fall might be the one he couldn’t get up from.

Mark knew he needed a safer, more independent life. That’s when he learned about Liverty, then known as Summer Housing, and The Ambrose, a building still under construction at the time. It represented hope, though it felt distant.

At the same time, Mark was locked in a different fight, applying for Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) funding through the NDIS. Like so many others, he was pushed toward a shared model, one that stripped away his independence and dignity. Mark’s application was denied under s100, forcing him to take his case to tribunal. It felt like yet another reminder that the system wasn’t built to see him as an individual with unique needs, only as a box to be ticked.

While this battle dragged on, The Ambrose was completed. And here, Mark’s journey took an extraordinary turn. In February 2023, Liverty stepped in with compassion and courage. They allowed him to move into The Ambrose on lesser funding, even while his tribunal case was still unresolved.

That decision didn’t just give Mark a new apartment, it gave him his life back. For the first time in years, he could move freely through his home. He could reach his bathroom in his chair without fear of falling. Mark could live independently, safely and with dignity. It was more than a roof and four walls, it was freedom. It was hope made real.

In June 2023, after months of uncertainty, Mark finally won his NDIA dispute and secured the correct SDA funding. Standing on the other side of that battle, he knows he wouldn’t have made it without Liverty Housing’s belief in him. Liverty Housing saw his potential when the system did not and trusted that independence is not a privilege, but a right.

Today, Mark remains forever grateful. His gratitude fuels his commitment to give back. Through the Tenancy Advisory Committee, he works to help improve living standards for others with disabilities. Mark shares his journey so that others don’t have to endure the same struggles, because no one should have to fight as hard as he did just to live safely in their own home.

This is more than a journey; it’s proof of what is possible when compassion meets action. It’s a reminder that independence changes everything.

It is Mark’s hope that every person with a disability is given the same chance he was given, the chance to live freely, safely and with dignity.

For Mark, Liverty has transformed a space into a life, one of confidence, mobility, and hope.
